What Is Smart Hands Support?

How data center smart hands differs from remote hands, what technical tasks it covers, and when you need it instead of basic remote hands.

Published September 2, 2026

Smart hands is technical, skilled on-site labor in a data center — the tier above basic remote hands. Where remote hands covers straightforward physical tasks, smart hands covers work that requires real technical competence: diagnosing an issue, configuring a device, terminating and testing cabling, or performing a hardware swap correctly the first time.

The line between the two isn't always sharp, and in practice, a visit that starts as remote hands sometimes needs to become smart hands once the technician is on site and the problem turns out to be more involved than expected.

What smart hands typically covers

  • Cable termination and certified testing (Cat6/Cat6A, fiber)
  • Hardware installation and configuration
  • Network troubleshooting — port, VLAN, and connectivity issues
  • Component-level swaps (drives, PSUs, memory, NICs)
  • Wireless access point installation and configuration
  • Basic switch and firewall configuration changes

Why it costs more than remote hands

Smart hands requires a technician who understands networking and infrastructure well enough to make judgment calls, not just follow a checklist. That's reflected in the rate — smart hands typically runs higher per hour than basic remote hands, though exact pricing varies by provider and region.

How to know which one you need

If the task is purely physical and doesn't require a decision — power-cycle this, visually check that — remote hands covers it. If the task requires diagnosing why something isn't working, configuring a device correctly, or doing certified cable work, you need smart hands. When in doubt, describe the task to your provider; a good one will tell you which tier it falls under before dispatching anyone.
